What does Family Systems mean?

Family Systems is a theoretical orientation that approaches the individual or relationship based on how they interact / effect the groups around them and vice versa. Which means we are all influenced by those around us. Exactly how we are influenced is often due to the family we were raised in and its traditions, rules, and relationships. How we are taught to be in relationships or use our emotions, plays a large role in how we relate to others as adults. As a theoretical orientation, Family Systems, isn’t necessarily used in large part during sessions – although it can be fascinating to see the patterns in your own family. I use Family Systems mostly in how I conceptualize and understand clients – to help me to see your relationships from your perspective.
